Acupuncture can be very helpful in the treatment of Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain .
There can be many causes of TMJ pain. These can include stress and anxiety, poor sleep - or simply working very long hours.
TMJ pain can also refer from the neck and shoulder region - particularly the upper back (often where we hold our stress).
TMJ pain can also result from (probably recent) dental work (please discuss this also with your dentist, if this is the case).
As mentioned earlier, TMJ pain can sometimes refer upwards from the neck and shoulder region - the shoulders can simetimes be very tight. So often, this region will also be treated - in addtion to the muscles around the jaw, perhaps the head, and the TMJ itself.
Often there may be clicking, and perhaps pain, when opening the mouth. There may be a malocclusion which means an incorrect alignment of the teeth. It may be this (a tooth issue - in which case please talk to your dentist about this) but it could also simply be (and frequently is) an imbalance in the muscles that control the opening and closing of the mouth (the bite strength) and this causes the jaw to deviate to one side (even very slightly) when the mouth opens. It is here that perhaps Osteopathy in addition to Acupuncture when used together could be particularly effective.
