Osteopathy, Acupuncture, Herbs and Medication
If you are worried about any of this — then of course all this needs to be discussed with your GP. Osteopathy and Acupuncture are ‘safe’ interventions, as there are no complications about putting more things into your body (herbs & medications). For example, during pregnancy and breastfeeding you would probably want to avoid all unnecessary medication as much as possible — and Osteopathy and Acupuncture are ‘safe’ alternatives.
Incidentally, research has suggested that the analgesic effects of acupuncture are from the potentisation of the endogenous opiates (enkephalin, endorphins) naturally occurring and many times more potent than morphine, and no doubt acupuncture can have similar effects on regulating other body processes.
Osteopathy can have similar effects on helping the body to regulate itself, via the neuroendocrine system (via the pituitary gland by cranial osteopathy) and other glands via the autonomics (sympathetic nervous system from T2 – L2), the cervical ganglion to neck muscles (and thyroid & parathyroid) and parasympathetic (from the cranial nerves and sacrum) which regulate blood flow and function of all the vital organs.
To put it simply, Osteopathy does far more than treat muscle and joint pain, and by spinal adjustments and enhancing the function of the spinal nerves (sympathetic chain, cervical nerves, and parasympathetic and sacral nerves) Osteopathic treatment can promote the correct functioning and blood flow to all the vital organs and tissues of the body. This is classical osteopathy — as taught by Littlejohn in London in the early Twentieth century, and later by (one of my own teachers) Wernham at the Institute of Classical Osteopathy.
Good naturopaths and GPs (if they take an interest in nutrition) should also be answering any questions you may have, and your GP should be consulted before changing, or making plans to change, any prescribed medication you may be taking.
